I created “Like a Rock” in conjunction with Lissa Hunter’s Take Two Fiber Arts Course.
My intention was
- to create a finished piece that the beholder could almost imagine having found “as is” on the beach
- to create a finished piece that the beholder could tell themselves a story about
- to highlight rather than obscure the beauty of the rock and its intricate details
Materials: rock from West Runton fossil beach, Norfolk UK; sea grass cordage; waxed Irish linen thread; genuine Jasper stone beads; Japanese glass seed beads,; copper wire
Size: 4 inches x 2.5 inches
In the above photo, you can see two tiny fossil shells on the left side of the rock. What are fossil shells? Over time, water rich in minerals flows through the sediment, replacing the organic material in the shell with minerals such as silica or calcium carbonate. This process, known as mineralization, preserves the shell as a fossil.
Status: artist’s personal collection
