“Rockbound” is part of my Entanglement Series.
Sometimes it’s good to just have a play with your materials and see what happens.
I wrapped this Norfolk beach rock and some miscellaneous copper findings with waxed linen and steel thread. Simple yet satisfying.
I have to admit that I had no clear intention when I started looping some waxed linen thread around the rock. I just picked up a leftover length of thread and started looping to get some practice at looping. The looping was a bit loose on the rock, so I thought I would wedge something underneath to tighten it up. I picked up some copper bits that were on my workbench and inserted them under the looping.
But after it was done, I thought it looked a bit like a staff or wand encased in the stone — a little bit of a Merlin / King Arthur vibe. A friend joked that “it looks like something left behind by the Vikings!” That’s what I love about doing this spontaneous kind of creating — a story emerges but the story is created by the beholder.
